Maputo, 26 Oct (AIM) – The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) has condemned the police attacks against peaceful demonstrators in Mozambique over the past week.
A very brief statement from the EU EOM issued on Friday declares that the Mission “condemns the violent dispersal of demonstrators and the political violence of the last days”.
The mission, it says, “urges respect for fundamental freedoms and the right of peaceful assembly, and calls on all parties to refrain from violence”.
The EU EOM says it “takes note” of the results of the 9 October general elections that the National Elections Commission (CNE) announced on Thursday.
It warns that the results declared by the CNE “have not dispelled the EU EOM’s concerns regarding the transparency of the counting and tabulation”.
The Mission again calls on the election management bodies “for the maximum transparency, reiterating the request for publishing the results disaggregated by polling station, and the Constitutional Council to appropriately address the challenges brought forward by different parties”.
The election results announced by the CNE were mostly at provincial level. There are no results announced from any of the polling stations.
The same criticism can be made of the opposition parties, which claim they undertook a parallel count of the votes from the polling stations. But, like the CNE, they have not published their polling station results.
