Maputo, 28 Oct (AIM) – An angry crowd burnt down a police post in the Chalaua administrative post, in the northern Mozambican province of Nampula, on Sunday afternoon.
An amateur video showed rioters attacking the police post and brandishing an AK-47 assault rifle, supposedly taken from a police officer.
The Nampula Provincial Police Command confirmed the attack, and said the incident began when police agents were protecting a group of supporters of the ruling Frelimo Party who were holding what they claimed was a peaceful march.
They clashed with supporters of the opposition party Podemos, who had come to Chalaua specifically to interrupt the Frelimo march. The opposition demonstrators also set on fire the local Frelimo office, and the house of the Frelimo First Secretary.
According to a report in the elections bulletin published by the anti-corruption NGO, the Centre for Public Integrity (CIP), police reinforcements could not contain the demonstration, and did not open fire on the crowd.
There were no reports of deaths or injuries.
