Maputo, 28 Oct (AIM) – Maputo Central Hospital (HCM), the largest health unit in Mozambique, provided medical care for 40 demonstrators who were injured during clashes with the police during the strikes and protests called by independent presidential candidate Venancio Mondlane, in order to protest against “electoral fraud”, and against the kidnappings that have affected the Mozambican business community.
The demonstrations, which took place last Monday, Thursday and Friday, were also intended to protest against the murder of Mondlane’s lawyer, Elvino Dias, and Paulo Guambe, an election agent for the opposition party Podemos.
According to Dino Lopes, director of emergency services at HCM, speaking on Monday to reporters, of these patients, 10 were hospitalized after being seriously injured.
“On the first day of the demonstrations, a total of 16 people were admitted, as I’ve mentioned in other reports, and we had two hospitalized, one for a fractured tibia and the other for a wound to the abdomen”, he said.
Lopes explained that in the second phase of the demonstrations, which took place on Thursday and Friday, a total of 24 patients were admitted to the emergency services.
“Among the 10 people hospitalized, we have a 41-year-old woman who is in a critical condition and is currently in intensive care, under the care
of our team”, he said.
He also said that, over the past week, the HCM received in total 1,185 patients, “420 of whom were victims of different types of trauma.”
“Of the 420 admissions, 29 were due to road accidents and 40 were victims of the demonstrations that took place on the 21st, 24th and 25th of this month”, he said.
