
Maputo, 4 Mar (AIM) – Unknown assailants on Monday kidnapped a 36 year old businessman of Indian nationality in the town of Chokwe, in the southern Mozambican province of Gaza.
A surveillance camera showed that the businessman, who has not yet been named, was seized by armed men on Chokwe’s Eduardo Mondlane Avenue at about 20.00.
Cited by the independent television station STV, the head of public relations in the Gaza police command, Carlos Macuacua, said four armed men seized the victim just after he had closed his shop. They fired a shot into the air, and then dragged the shopkeeper into their car.
The police say that in Maputo city they have detained three men suspected of involvement in the kidnapping of a Mozambican businessman on 21 February, in the neighbourhood of Polana Cimento, near the premises of the Mozambican Olympic Committee.
A spoksperson for the National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic) said the men arrested were in the possession of firearms. One of them had escaped from a Maputo prison, and he gave the police information on four other members of the kidnap gang.
When presented to reporters, all three detainees denied any involvement in kidnappings.
