Maputo, 31 Mar (AIM) – The German government has pledged to disburse 500,000 Euros (540,800 dollars at the current exchange rate) to fund a Green Hydrogen Project in Mozambique.
The financing agreement was signed last Friday by Joaquim Ou-chim, chairperson of the publicly-owned electricity company, EDM, and by the German ambassador, Ronald Munch.
According to a statement, the project is aimed at diversifying Mozambique’s energy matrix, and “the 500,000 Euros will be used to hire specialized consultants to conduct market studies for green hydrogen initiatives.”
This sum will be disbursed by the German Development Bank (KFW).
According to Munch, green hydrogen is considered a “fundamental” natural energy resource in the process of diversifying Mozambique’s energy matrix.
“The promotion of green hydrogen in Mozambique can help diversify the energy supply, create job opportunities and boost the development of industries and infrastructure for the Mozambican people”, he said.
Munch said that “Mozambique has abundant natural resources, including water, solar and wind energy, which provide good conditions for the production of green hydrogen, in a project for which an international tender will be launched.”
For his part, Ou-chim revealed that the study will last around six to nine months and will be implemented through environmentally friendly technology, “as the country has vast natural resources for this purpose.”
The National Director of Energy, Marcelina Mataveia, said that green hydrogen is technically and economically viable.
“The aim is to ensure that we can export part of this natural resource and its by-products, such as oxygen and ammonia, both of which are essential for the development of agricultural fertilizers”, she said.
