Maputo, 8 Apr (AIM) – A claim that the Mozambican authorities will use electronic voting in elections to be held later this year is entirely untrue, according to the fact checking unit of the Mozambican chapter of the regional press freedom body MISA (Media Institute of Southern Africa).
A website supposedly containing news about Mozambique claimed that the former presidential candidate Venancio Mondlane has confirmed that “the 2025 elections will be held in an electronic format”.
Mondlane is supposed to have given an interview declaring that electronic voting would bring greater transparency, security and efficiency to voting.
MISA says that this story is completely false. First, no elections are scheduled to take place in Mozambique this year. Municipal elections are due in 2028, while the next presidential, parliamentary and provincial elections will be held in 2029.
Venancio Mondlane has said nothing about electronic voting, while the spokesperson for the National Elections Commission (CNE), Paulo Cuinica, has said that, although there is a recommenation to hold a study on electronic voting, no decision has been taken.
Cuinica told MISA that a meeting in February, drawing up a balance of the 2023 and 2024 elections, had recommended a study.
“We are still reflecting on the matter”, said Cuinica. “It is not true that a project of this sort is being implemented in Mozambique”.
