Maputo, 6 May (AIM) – A group of six unknown assailants on Monday kidnapped the son of a Chinese businessman in Mahlemele neighbourhood, in the southern Mozambican municipality of Matola.
The victim’s father owns a company that sells building materials. The criminals also shot the victim’s mother in the leg when she attempted to save her son.
According to eyewitnesses, the criminals went to a building site along Maputo’s ring road, where they pretended to be interested in buying building materials.
“The young man who was kidnapped tried to resist. However, since the Police delayed arriving at the crime scene, it became easier for the bandits to kidnap him and escape. To avoid any attempt at pursuit, the criminals punctured the tyres of some vehicles in the vicinity of the commercial establishment”, one source said.
The Police still have no details about the criminals or the whereabouts of their victim.
Last Friday, unknown assailants murdered a Portuguese businessman, Jose Pedro Silva, also in Matola municipality. Silva was the executive director of the company Sotubos, and the son of the company’s owner.
The police have denied reports that the criminals had intended to kidnap Silva. The true motive seems to have been robbery. Silva had been collecting money from branches of Sotubos, and this money was stolen when the criminals ambushed his car.
