Nampula (Mozambique), 11 May (AIM) – At least 16 people lost their lives and another 12 were seriously injured in a traffic accident that took place on Saturday evening in Nihequihi River region, Nacala-a-Velha district, northern Mozambican province of Nampula.
According to the country’s Institute of Road Transport (INATRO), the tragedy occurred when the driver of the Toyota Dyna attempted to climb an incline after crossing the Nihequeni River, losing control of the vehicle, which then overturned.
Authorities suggest that the accident may have been caused by mechanical problems with the vehicle and the poor condition of the road. Among the fatalities are 11 children.
“We have 16 deaths and 12 survivors, eight of whom are children. Of these, three suffered fractures. Their ages range from four to 25 years old. Some patients remain hospitalized at the Nacala-a-Velha Health Center, totaling 11, all in stable condition” said Nacir Américo, District Chief Medical Officer.
According to reports, the victims were traveling mixed in with various cargo and the vehicle’s driver, who survived the accident, fled the scene.
Mozambican President Daniel Chapo, in his message of condolence, expressed deep sorrow for the tragic accident, saying that “this tragedy represents a moment of profound national grief and mourning.”
“At this difficult time, we offer our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to the injured”, he said.
Chapo also called on the drivers to strictly adhere to road safety regulations because protecting lives is crucial.
