Maputo, 19 May (AIM) – Mozambican President Daniel Chapo on Monday appointed former Education Minister, Carmelita Namashulua, as State General Inspector.
The State General Inspector, which is a new body created by President Chapo, will be “responsible for unravelling the barriers to development and dealing with corruption in the public sector.”
The body, which operates out of the presidential offices, will also be responsible for strengthening the mechanisms of oversight, audits, and the promotion of integrity in the country’s Public Administration.
“The appointment of Carmelita Namashulua marks the beginning of the functioning of the new institution, created with the objective of strengthening the internal control of the State, overseeing administrative acts, and promoting greater transparency and good governance in public bodies”, reads the note.
According to the document, President Chapo also appointed Emanuel Mabumo and Laura Nhancale as Deputy State General Inspectors.
Namashulua’s appointment to this position is controversial, given that she was Minister of Education when the scandal regarding serious geographical and mathematical errors in schoolbooks, printed in Portugal, was found in 2022.
As education minister, Namashulua couldn’t even solve the problem regarding payment of overtime to teachers, although she often claimed that the problem was being solved. The long delays in paying for overtime continue to infuriate teachers, leading to sporadic strikes.
