Maputo, 31 May (AIM) – Antonio Muchanga, a former parliamentary deputy for the opposition party Renamo, insists that party’s leader Ossufo Momade must resign immediately “because he is responsible for the internal crisis affecting the party.”
Muchanga had been suspended from Renamo membership for an indefinite period. However, he took the matter to court and he won the case. The City Law Court issued a ruling in favour of Muchanga, suspending the decision of the party’s Jurisdictional Council.
According to Munchanga, speaking on Saturday to Renamo members, during his visit to the central province of Zambezia, the legacy left by late Renamo leader, Afonso Dhlakama, is being undermined by the current leadership.
“Divisions currently affecting the party’s internal affairs stem from the current leadership’s inability to manage the organization’s affairs. Several attempts to resolve the issues through Renamo’s internal bodies had failed to produce satisfactory results”, he said, cited by the independent paper “O País”.
Muchanga also explained that the meeting with other members served to analyze the party’s internal situation and discuss possible solutions for its reorganization.
“Momade’s leadership adopts repressive measures against members who express dissenting views, a situation which has contributed to the escalation of internal tensions”, he said.
Renamo was once the country’s main opposition party, but it has now been clearly overtaken by the National Alliance for a Free and Autonomous Mozambique (Anamola), led by former presidential candidate Venancio Mondlane.
