Maputo, 3 Jun (AIM) – Peter Ulanga, chairperson of the state-owned Air Tanzania (ATCL), has announced that the company may soon start operating flights to Mozambique as part of the implementation of an agreement between the two governments.
According to Ulanga, interviewed by Radio Moçambique, in an initial phase, the Tanzania national flag carrier plans to operate flights to Mozambican southern cities of Maputo, central city of Beira, and the northern cities of Nampula, Pemba and Nacala.
“Air Tanzania also intends to connect Mozambican travelers to other destinations across its network”, he said.
The announcement emerges at a moment when Mozambique’s flag carrier, Mozambican Airlines (LAM), is facing criticism as a result of a controversial acquisition of two Embraer-190s, which remain grounded in South Africa for several months for “maintenance reasons.” The planes cost the airline 12.5 million US dollars each.
ATCL, which has a fleet of 16 aircrafts, operates a network with over 120 weekly flights, averaging about 45 to 50 scheduled flights per day. The airline links its hub at Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam to over 30 domestic and international destinations across Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Europe.
