Vacina contra a colera
Maputo, 15 Jun (AIM) – The French government will disburse, through the Global Alliance for Vaccines (GAVI), 275 million US dollars to support Mozambique’s programs aimed at combating “malaria, polio, pneumonia, diarrhea, measles, rubella, and cancer, among other diseases”, in the next five years
The announcement was made in Maputo by GAVI executive director, Sania Nishtar, during the presentation of the 1st International Forum on Community Health Subsystems, Reduction of Maternal, Neonatal and Infant Mortality.
“That is why I am here to convey, with great humility, that GAVI will continue to support these vaccines. We will help Mozambique introduce a new vaccine against type B polio,” she declared.
Nishtar also emphasized that the increase in cholera cases recorded in 2022 contributed to the global vaccine shortage.
However, she “commend Mozambique’s unique characteristics in the health sector, namely the integrated service delivery model, both in primary health care settings and in the outreach model.”
Nishtar believes that Mozambique’s experience could be expanded and shared with other African countries.
“We believe that international agencies should channel resources through governmental systems and respect the country’s decision-making, especially regarding the choice of partnerships and programs”, she said.
For his part, mayor of Maputo Municipality, Rasaque Manhique, revealed that the health authorities recorded a total of 1,312 neonatal deaths in Maputo, since the beginning of 2025.
According to Manhique, these figures expose the weaknesses in the system for prevention, monitoring, and assistance to pregnant women, mothers, and newborns.
During the same period, 63 maternal deaths were also recorded.
“These figures reveal the need for reforms in prevention, monitoring, and assistance actions for pregnant women, mothers, and also children. Strengthening the community-based healthcare system is a fundamental element in bringing healthcare closer to the population, allowing for more effective and humane responses to the challenges the sector faces”, the mayor said.
