Maputo, 29 Jun (AIM) – The Mozambican government has announced that the 15 Mozambican students currently in Caracas, Venezuela’s capital, are safe and out of danger following last week’s devastating earthquake that killed over 1,400 people.
A statement released by the government’s press office (GABINFO) points out that only one student sustained a minor knee injury from a fall while descending the stairs of the building where he was staying.
The authorities, the document says, took steps to ascertain the status of Mozambican citizens, with a particular focus on higher education students.
“The government continues to monitor the situation, maintaining contact with Venezuelan authorities and relevant diplomatic missions to ensure necessary support for Mozambican citizens”, reads the document.
According to Venezuelan authorities, rescuers are still racing to reach survivors beneath the rubble and many displaced families have nowhere to go in Caracas, La Guaira and surrounding areas.
The Venezuelan President, Delcy Rodríguez, through her social media, said that the country has support from more than 24 countries, including 2,741 emergency workers and 86 canine units.
