Maputo, 10 Sep AIM) – Former guerrillas and members of Renamo party, which used to be the country’s main opposition movement, believe that the repeated postponements of the National Council meeting is an obstacle to efforts to overcome the internal crisis affecting the party.
Some members of the party have been putting pressure on the current Renamo leader Ossufo Momade to resign. They blame Momade for Renamo’s poor showing in last year’s general elections. This movement to sack Momade has once closed down almost all the Renamo provincial delegations.
According to João Machava, spokesperson for Renamo’s National Management Commission, speaking to reporters on Wednesday, in Maputo, postponing the party’s National Council is another strategy by the current leader to avoid stepping down.
“We consider these postponements to be delaying tactics. These postponements are aimed at prolonging the current impasse. The National Council meeting was originally scheduled for March, subsequently moved to April, and has now been postponed again to October”, Machava said.
Machava believes that these postponements do not help create the conditions necessary to resolve internal disagreements. “We will go into the National Council divided, and we will leave even more divided. Given the current scenario, the Commission maintains its call for an extraordinary congress, viewing this forum as a potential way to overcome the current impasse.”
The National Management Commission is set to meet on September 12 and 13 to evaluate, among other matters, the work carried out by the Central Brigades over the last quarter and to analyze the party’s internal political situation.
The meeting is also expected to consider the announced National Council gathering scheduled for October and to define the Commission’s stance on the next steps to be taken.
Machava reiterated that Ossufo Momade must resign as leader of the party, that’s why “we remain open to dialogue and to fostering closer ties among the party’s various factions, with trust, openness, and respect for commitments made.”
