Maputo, 4 Jan (AIM) – Four people died and 13 others suffered serious injuries in a traffic accident that took place on Wednesday in the Helele region, Zavala district, in the southern Mozambican province of Inhambane.
The accident involved a passenger transport vehicle that was traveling through Homoíne district to Maputo city. The authorities point to speeding as the probable cause of the accident
The head doctor at Quissico Hospital confirmed that 14 people were injured, one of whom later lost his life.
“We had information that three people lost their lives at the scene of the accident and the fourth died at Quissico Hospital, where the 14 injured were evacuated, bringing the total at the moment to 13 people in need of medical attention”, he said.
He announced that four of the injured had been transferred to Inhambane Provincial Hospital, and nine remained under observation.
The head of Public Relations at the Inhambane Provincial Police Command, Nércia Bata, reiterated her call for motorists to drive defensively and for passengers not to accept excessive speeds.
“We reiterate our appeal to drivers to always prioritize defensive driving and to avoid getting behind the wheel while fatigued, because it can also be one of the factors behind accidents”, she said.
