Maputo, 16 Apr (AIM) – Ukraine opened an embassy in Maputo on Monday night, thus fulfilling a promise made by the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmitro Kuleba, during his visit to Mozambique last year.
Ukraine’s Special Envoy for Africa and the Middle East, Maksym Subkh, chaired the ceremony opening the embassy, and recalled that Mozambique’s relations with Ukraine go back to the days of the Soviet Union, when many Mozambicans were trained in Ukrainian institutions.
Earlier in the day Mozambican Foreign Minister Veronica Macamo received Subkh. After that meeting, Subkh declared “Our countries have deep links of friendship and partnership, and we are sure that the opening of the embassy will also open a new page in our relations”.
The embassy, he continued, “will open new prospects to increasing the relations between our countries in various fields”.
He said he spoke with Macamo about the preparations for the peace summit to be held in June in Switzerland, and hoped that Mozambique will participate in this summit.
“We also discussed the possibility of interchanges at the highest level”, said the Ukrainian diplomat, “and we spoke of the need to expand the legal basis of our relations”.
Subkh hoped that relations will also be established between the Mozambican and the Ukrainian parliaments.
