Maputo, 21 Jun (AIM) – The permanent secretary of Macomia district, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, Cristóvão Alberto, has admitted that all the administrative posts in the district are still largely abandoned as a result of extreme violence carried out by islamist terrorists.
According to Alberto, cited in Friday’s issue of the independent daily “O País”, for almost two years, the public institutions, including the government, have continued to function in an improvised way due to the insecurity in the area, in Macomia’s three administrative posts.
Most of the population, including staff of the public administration, have fled to the district capital, Macomia town.
“All the people from the administrative posts in Macomia – I’m referring to Mucojo, Quiterajo and Chai – are still in the district capital, because the security situation must be controlled and so we’re moving forward. Once we have control of the entire post and district, we will resume administration at these posts. The population is still with us at Macomia town”, he said.
After the terrorist attack on the town of Macomia on 10 May, part of the population and state officials were forced to leave the district headquarters for safe areas.
“As long as security is working, we are displaced for a while, but we are travelling back and forth. That is until security tells us to come back permanently. And, as I was saying, when the upper structure of the province tells us to go back to the district, we’ll do that”, he explained.
