Maputo, 8 Aug (AIM) – The Japanese government has disbursed two million dollars to the World Food Programme (WFP) to provide food aid to 48,000 people displaced from their homes as a result of the Islamist terrorism in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado.
According to a WFP statement, the amount will improve the living condition of the victims of terrorism in Cabo Delgado.
“This timely contribution will make it possible to support the country’s most vulnerable populations by distributing rice and tinned food from Japan to around 48,000 internally displaced people in Cabo Delgado province over a period of six months”, reads the statement.
Cabo Delgado has been facing terrorist attacks by groups associated with the Islamic State for more than six years. According to official figures, the extreme violence carried out by terrorists has displaced more than 1.2 million people.
Last July, the Norwegian government disbursed 3.3 million dollars to the WFP to strengthen food systems adapted to climate change and to expand school feeding programmes in six districts of the southern Mozambican provinces of Gaza and Inhambane.
