Maputo, 28 Aug (AIM) – Mozambique’s National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) has dismantled a clandestine clinic that was operating in the southern province of Inhambane.
The clinic was functioning in the home of an employee of Inhambane Provincial Hospital.
During the operation, which counted on the cooperation with the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), a significant quantity of medicines from the National Health Service and medical-surgical equipment were recovered.
During the raid, according to Wednesday’s issue of the independent newsheet “Carta de Moçambique”, the authorities arrested the 53-year-old hospital workers.
Speaking briefly to reporters, the arrested man said that the clinic had been providing assistance to households and neighbors since October last year, treating illnesses such as malaria and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
He claimed said that some of the medicines used to be offered to his illegal clinic by the Inhambane Provincial Hospital, while the other part used to be bought from colleagues.
The SERNIC spokesperson in Inhambane, Alceres Cuamba, explained that the man had tried to negotiate in order to conceal more information on the case.
“There is no doubt that there will be more arrests in the coming days in connection with this illegal practice”, he said.
Last week, SERNIC arrested a health worker in the same province who was suspected of being involved in the theft of seven computers and other materials belonging to Inhambane Provincial Hospital.
