Maputo, 10 Mar (AIM) – The Mozambican Attorney-General’s Office (PGR) has agreed to delay its interrogation of former presidential candidate Venancio Mondlane from Monday to Tuesday.
The PGR, cited by the independent television station STV, said the delay was at Mondlane’s request.
Mondlane left the country last Wednesday, shortly after the riot police had fired on is motorcade, an incident interpreted by his supporter as an assassination attempt.
Claims that Mondlane had fled the country were easily disproved. In fact, he had flown, via South Africa, to Gaberone, where on Saturday he met with the former President of Botswana, Ian Khama. Mondlane has not revealed the nature of his meeting with Khama.
Mondlane’s legal adviser, Denis Tivane, has promised that some time later this week, Mondlane will give a press conference.
The PGR has not announced why it wishes to interrogate Mondlane, other than that it is in connection with a case concerning the post-election violence and looting.
Since Mondlane publicly called for demonstrations against the fraudulent results announced from the 9 October general elections, he has been accused of “moral authorship” of the violence – even though at the time the demonstrations began, Mondlane was out of the country.
As far as is known, so far no criminal proceedings have been opened against Mondlane.
