Maputo, 9 Apr (AIM) – The Mozambican government on Tuesday appointed Aníbal Mbalango as the new chairperson of the Tax Authority (AT), challenging him to raise more revenue.
Mbalango replaces Eliza Zacarias, who was Secretary of State for the central Tete province and took over as AT chairperson in August 2004. She replaced Amélia Muendane, who is currently heading the publicly-owned Mozambique Airports company.
According to government spokesperson and Minister of State Administration, Inocêncio Impissa, speaking to reporters in Maputo, at the end of a meeting of the Council of Ministers (Cabinet), Mbalango will lead the AT in facing challenges to raise more revenue.
“Mbalango is an employee of the Tax Authority, with 20 years of service, 14 of them spent working in taxing the extractive sector”, said Impissa. “He also headed the Task Force for the taxation of capital gains”.
Regarding the shortage of fuel in some parts of the country, Impissa claimed that there is fuel in the ports. “What is happening is that there are problems related to the logistics chain”, he said.
“The government has promised to find out more about the situation and also about the most recent attacks that took place in the Nhamapadza region, along the main north-south road (EN1)”, he added.
Impissa was referring to the Tuesday morning ambush in which unidentified assailants destroyed seven vehicles. Nobody has claimed responsibility for this attack, and the latest speculation is that it was the work of demobilised guerrillas of the former rebel movement Renamo.
