Maputo, 23 Jun (AIM) – Unidentified armed men kidnapped a businessman on Saturday morning, in the heart of Maputo.
The victim is the owner of the Avicenna pharmacy on Vladimir Lenine Avenue, near the bustling Janet Market. Although this is a crowded area, the kidnappers were able to seize their victim and make their getaway without being intercepted.
At a Sunday press conference, Daniel Macuacua, of the public relations department of the police command, said the kidnapping occurred at about 09.45. Four men, two of them carrying pistols, entered the pharmacy and seized its owner. No attempt was made to stop them as they drove their victim away in a Toyota Ractis car.
Eye-witnesses told reporters that two of the criminals entered the pharmacy and grabbed its owner, who is a 40 year old man of Lebanese nationality. The other two members of the gang held back, and threatened the other clients of the pharmacy with their guns. No shots were fired and there were no reports of any injuries.
Macuacua said the police had dispatched teams across all the main avenues of the city, but failed to locate the kidnappers or rescue their victim.
