Maputo, 22 Oct (AIM) – Islamist terrorists attacked a Mozambican military convoy on Tuesday on National Highway 380, the main road in the north of Cabo Delgado province, between the Oasse crossroads and Macomia town, according to a report in Wednesday’s issue of the independent newssheet “Carta de Mocambique”.
Eyewitnesses told the paper that the terrorists attacked the convoy shortly before it reached Xitaxi locality, in Muidumbe district. The ambush resulted in the destruction of a police vehicle and an unspecified number of deaths, among both soldiers and civilians.
The attack led to panic among some people travelling in the convoy who abandoned their vehicles and fled into the bush. Most vehicles in the convoy turned round and returned to Oasse, although some continued their journey and arrived in Macomia.
The situation led the authorities to interrupt all traffic of vehicles and pedestrians along the Oasse-Macomia stretch of road.
This ambush happened on the same day as Mozambican President Daniel Chapo told a press conference in Geneva that terrorism in Mozambique “has its days counted”.
But he admitted that terrorism remained a major concern and was at the top of the government’s agenda.
He described the jihadist attacks as “sporadic” and declared that the government is determined to bring peace and security to the entire country.
