Maputo, 23 Feb (AIM) – At least two people died when a group of Islamist terrorists attacked a military escort last Sunday along National Road Number 280 (EN280), in Macomia district, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado.
During the attack, an unspecified number of people sustained injuries, some minor and some serious, according to sources cited in Tuesday’s issue of the independent newsheet “Carta de Moçambique.”
According to the paper’s sources, the ambush occurred in an area near the V Congresso village, in Chai administrative post, when a group of armed men fired several shots. The moving vehicles were traveling under military escort towards Macomia town.
The victims, one of whom was a driver were all struck by bullets. The terrorists also looted various goods from the attacked trucks.
As a result of this attack, the military escort on the Macomia–Awasse stretch of the EN280 and vice versa was temporarily suspended, which caused a long queue of vehicles in the town of Macomia, as well as in Awasse.
