Maputo, 8 May (AIM) – The Italian Eni multinational, which leads the Coral Sul FLNG Project, a floating platform anchored in Area 4 of the Rovuma basin, in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, believes that Mozambique is consolidating itself as one of the main global LNG producers.
According to Marica Calabrese, director of Eni Rovuma Basin, speaking at the 12th Mozambique Mining and Energy Conference and Exhibition, in Maputo, there are operational results since the start of production in 2022. The project has been exporting around one shipment of LNG per week.
Calabrese recalled that Coral Sul was the first project to put gas from the Rovuma Basin into production, at a time when many doubted the initiative’s proposals.
“The Area 4 partners, led by Eni, were chosen to make this project fundamental for the country.
Production, which began in 2022, currently presents a level of production stability that is unmatched in the world. This project represents an unprecedented technological achievement, being the only floating platform in the world that produces gas in ultra-deep waters, since the operation is conducted with high international standards of health, safety, and technical integrity”, he said.
According to Calabrese, Coral Sul project has already channeled nearly 300 million US dollars in revenue to Mozambican state coffers and “it has carried out more than 150 shipments of LNG for export.”
“Eni and all the partners in Area 4 are proud of this. And I think all Mozambicans should also be proud of this achievement we have here. The next chapter in the development of liquefied natural gas in Mozambique will be Coral Norte FLNG, whose development plan has already been approved and whose final investment decision has already been made”, she said.
Coral Norte development plan should allow ENI to produce 3.5 million tonnes of LNG per year. The project, which is a floating platform, budgeted at 7.2 billion dollars, and it could start production in the second quarter of 2028. Coral Norte is expected to operate for 30 years.
