Matola, 29 May (AIM) – Acubar Baptista, Permanent Secretary at the Mozambican Ministry of Agriculture, has announced that the government has secured 500 million US dollars to fund agriculture activities and strengthen livestock.
According to Baptista, speaking on the sidelines of the Public Consultation on the Strategic Plan for Agricultural Sector Development (PEDSA 2036) and Agribusiness Value Chain Development Program (MozAgriBiz), the funds will be disbursed by the World Bank in two phases.
“The priority is to focus on producing staple foods, essentially rice and maize, beans, and also potatoes. The aim is to consolidate dietary diversification for the population and ensure food security”, he said.
The Permanent Secretary explained that on the protein side, the plan includes scaling up livestock production. “We also want to tackle livestock, which is the protein component. We are talking about chickens and eggs, as well as soybean production, and cattle and goat farming”, he said.
The event – which was aimed at gathering contributions and recommendations to strengthen PEDSA 2036 and MozAgriBiz – was also focused on creating strategies to promote a more productive, modern, resilient, and competitive agricultural sector, capable of contributing for food security, job creation, income generation, and sustainable development in the country.
