Maputo, 24 Jan (AIM) – The German government has announced the disbursement of about 90 million Euros (98.1 million dollars, at the current exchange rate) for the second phase of the construction of a coastal protection wall in the central Mozambican city of Beira.
The first phase of building the wall, which ends in March of the current year, is budgeted at about one million Euros, provided by the German bank KFW.
The announcement was made by the German ambassador to Mozambique, Ronald Münch, during a working visit to monitor the first phase of the construction.
According to Münch, the amount will also be used for other projects in Sofala province, especially when it comes to projects intended to fight climate change. It includes the requalification of Goto region, in the Beira neighbourhood of Ponta-gêa.
“Climate change is a challenge for all of us, which is why joint efforts are needed to mitigate it in order to avoid human losses and material damage”, said the diplomat.
“Germany is proud to be a strategic partner of the Mozambican Government and of the Beira Municipality in the fight against climate change. The project to build the coastal protection wall in Beira is part of this endeavour, which essentially aims to create solid foundations for climate resilience”, he added.
For his part, the mayor of Beira, Albano Carige, said “We will be building drainage ditches that will contribute to the rapid flow of water and, in total, we will spend about 15 million Euros, out of the 90 made available by Germany”.
