Maputo, 12 Mar (AIM) – The Japanese government, through its International Cooperation Agency (JICA), has disbursed over 45 million dollars for the construction of the Nacala Power Station, in the northern Mozambican province of Nampula.
The agreement for the disbursement was signed on Friday, in Maputo, by Foreign Minister Veronica Macamo and by the Japanese ambassador, Hamada Keiji.
The project aims at strengthening the supply of electricity to the Northern region of Mozambique.
“This cooperation, in which projects in various fields are executed in the form of a package, was presented in the new Development Cooperation Charter approved by the cabinet last year. Mozambique will be the first country where Japan’s government will implement this new form of cooperation”, said the ambassador.
Japan will also disburse more than nine million dollars for the purchase of vehicles for the Mozambican Police (PRM) and National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC).
According to Hamada, the amount also includes strengthening the capacity to combat terrorism that has been plaguing the northern province of Cabo Delgado, since 2017.
“The project will contribute to Mozambique’s stability and growth and, by extension, to the stable supply of energy to Japan and the world. That’s why improving security in Cabo Delgado is one of the most important challenges, not only for Mozambique but also for the world”, the diplomat said.
For her part, Macamo said that the aid from Japan will help reduce the suffering of the victims of terrorism in Cabo Delgado.
She added that the Japanese support for the construction of the Nacala Power Station is important because it will bring development for the local communities as well as for the country in general.
