Polícia tenta dispersar manifestantes em Maputo
Maputo, 20 Nov (AIM) – At least three people died and 14 others were injured, in the central Mozambican province of Manica, during demonstrations called by the independent presidential candidate Venancio Mondlane to protest against the allegedly fraudulent results of the general elections held on 9 October.
The victims were shot dead by the police on Sunday and Monday.
According to Juvenal Chitovele, clinical director of the Chimoio Provincial Hospital (HPC), speaking to reporters on Tuesday, “we received on Monday four more patients. Two of them had very serious abdominal injuries and died shortly after being admitted to hospital. Two others had undergone surgery and were stable. The third fatality occurred during Sunday night’s demonstrations.”
According to Chitovele, the Hospital received a cumulative total of 14 patients. Five of them are still hospitalised, six have been discharged and three have died.
According to the anti-corruption NGO, the centre for public integrity (CIP), the clashes between the Police and demonstrators at 38 Milímetro market in the Manica provincial capital, Chimoio, started when police officers burned down a store belonging to a personal friend of Venâncio Mondlane, Paulino White. Angry vendors then revolted against the police and several demonstrators burned tyres and blocked roads.
