Maputo, 10 Feb (AIM) – The movement of Islamist terrorists has forced hundreds of households to leave the Chai administrative post, in Macomia district, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, to look for safer shelter in Macomia town.
According to sources cited in Monday’s issue of the independent newssheet “Carta de Moçambique”, some refugee families are being received by their relatives living in the town, while others are staying at government-run accommodation centers.
The victims claim to have left everything behind, including their fields, which are their main source of sustenance.
The displaced people arriving in Macomia town come from the villages of Litandacua, attacked last Thursday, and Nkoe and Chai-sede, which have both been frequently attacked by armed groups.
“On Sunday, we received three overcrowded cars, not to mention the people who have been arriving on foot since Friday. These are families who have fled Chai. These terrorists perhaps want everyone to stay here so that we die of hunger together”, a source said.
The newly arrived families have not yet received any assistance, although the others, previously registered, are already receiving humanitarian support.
