Maputo, 25 Apr (AIM) – The Association of United Mozambican Health Professionals (APSUSM) has decided to resume, as of Friday, its national strike as a result of lack of understanding with the government at the negotiating table.
The strike will last for a period of 30 days, but may be extended if the government does not solve the demands raised by the health workers.
APSUSM spokesperson, Rosana Zunguze, told reporters on Wednesday, in Maputo, that the strike is resuming due to the failure of the government, to honour several promises, including the promotion of health professionals and the payment of overtime pay in arrears.
Zunguze explained that much has not been accomplished since the last strike was suspended in August 2023.
“What has happened in recent days is that, for example, some hospitals go two weeks or more without electricity or water, and it is only after the supplies are cut off that the problem is resolved. Patients go for days without food and it’s up to their families to make up the shortage, and there’s also a lack of fuel for ambulances”, she claimed.
Zunguze said the strike was a way of asking for help or putting pressure on the government to find solutions.
“We don’t want to go on strike”, she said. “We do it with a lot of pain, we just want to see all the problems of the profession and the patients solved”, she said.
