Maputo, 29 Jul (AIM) – The Mozambican Police (PRM) has arrested and opened criminal proceedings against a 30-year-old man for allegedly inciting violence and promoting disinformation about the presence of Islamist terrorists in some neighbourhoods of Pemba, capital of the northern province of Cabo Delgado.
According to Eugénia Nhamussua, the police spokesperson in Pemba, cited in Monday’s issue of the independent newsheet “Carta de Moçambique”, in a video that circulated on social media, the man (who has not been named) was caught mentioning Ingonane, Cariacó and Paquitequete as neighborhoods that are the target of terrorist attack.
The police believe that the intention of the man was to use the video to cause panic among the population of Pemba, where many victims of terrorism have been sheltering since they abandoned their places of origin.
“In the 39-minute video”, said Nhamassua, “the young man also appeals to people to take precautionary measures as the alleged terrorists pass by their homes at night. He is heard saying that, as from 10pm, the people must remain silent when anyone knocks on their door”.
However, the author of the video claimed that he had not intended to create panic and apologized to the authorities.
