Maputo, 9 Aug (AIM) – Mozambique’s Higher Council of the Public Prosecutor’s Office (CSMMP) has sacked six law officers for abuse of power, and for requesting and receiving bribes to speed proceedings.
According to a CSMMP statement, among the dismissed officials, there is a public prosecutor, a district law clerk, a provincial law clerk, and an assistant law clerk.
“The prosecutor was dismissed because he used his functions for his own benefit and to the detriment of third parties, by irregularly processing a criminal case against a foreign national, accused of international drug trafficking, to the detriment of justice and the Mozambican state”, reads the document, without giving further details.
The district law clerk and provincial law clerk were dismissed “for using their functions to their own benefit and to the detriment of third parties, by requesting and receiving money to facilitate the speed of proceedings.”
In addition to abuse of power and bribery, some of those sacked “used seized counterfeit foreign banknotes.”
“The aforementioned sanctions are the result of a breach of professional duties and principles, namely zeal, legality, dignity, loyalty and honesty. As there are indications that a criminal offence has been committed, the CSMMP has ordered that copies be taken and forwarded to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, so that the appropriate criminal proceedings can be instituted”, the document reads.
The officials in question were based in Maputo city, and in Gaza and Tete provinces.
